Bill Blass deftly managed to break ground with neutral colors and became known for his palate of browns, beige, white and camel. I remember how elegant Grace Kelly looked wearing his pieces in beige cashmere with pearls and a grey pencil skirt. In its time, that look became the ultimate in American chic. When I first went to New York after college, I trekked downtown to Orchard Street where you could buy discounted designer clothes. I was thrilled to purchase a Blass Sport outfit with brown linen pants and a cropped white jacket with brown polka dots and brown piping. Wearing it made me feel so pulled together and ready to take on the world. At the time, I had one other Bill Blass piece in my wardrobe‚Äö?Ñ?¨a beige, matte jersey number my mom had bought for herself when I was in high school and had given me when I left for Manhattan. I scarcely would have thought then that Bill Blass would soon become a personal friend... A few years later, when I was 25, Oscar de la Renta, introduced him to me at a fashion event. I have fond memories of that evening and Bill's affable nature. After pleasantries were exchanged, he said, "Kid, you want a martini?" It was my first ever... straight up with olives. |
