Weddings, Fall 2007 >> Tantalizing Tableaux >> A Navy and White Wedding

For many, navy and white conjures up images of summer entertaining, balmy weather and nautical themes. But as someone who has always been drawn to this color combination, I am excited about the unexpected possibilities. I thought how unusual—and wonderfully challenging—it would be to use this stalwart duo as a wedding palette.
Taking inspiration from one of my favorite ribbons, the saddle stitch, I based the entire table around a piece of chic grosgrain that's less than an inch wide. The dashes combined with the dots and quilting elements add an interesting symmetry and geometric flair that's carried out on the linens as well.
The venerable Sylvia Weinstock created the individual wedding cakes trimmed in her amazing fondant version of the ribbon. The result was more enchanting than than I could have hoped. The newly knotted couple can either cut and share an individual cake—there's great symbolism there—or have a larger version in addition to the tiny confections. Either way, it is truly magical to see an army of waiters swoop into the room at once to deliver dozens of cakes.
