When I look at this crisp, perfect blue that’s neither too green nor gray nor violet, it reminds me of the vast summer skies of my childhood growing up in the Midwest. With a few white puffy clouds here and there, this gorgeous blue is neutral in that it looks good with everything, just as a clear sky does.
Here it is captured in a classic fabric which is apropos since in life, we all are informed by our experiences. Mine as a fashion designer has had a huge impact on how I see color, texture, and composition in everything I design, whether it’s a garden, tabletop or room décor.
Swiss Dot, the classic fabric I love, became the inspiration for this wedding table. I have carried the Swiss Dot cotton papers I found in India in many colors throughout my Collections, and love its incarnation here as the wedding cake. I gave a swatch of the paper to Sylvia Weinstock, known as the “Leonardo da Vinci of cakes,” and asked her to create a tiered cake that looks as if it is wrapped in the paper. Complete with a white taffeta ribbon, made of gum paste and topped with a nosegay of white flowers, the result is delightful.
