An alternative to hosting a get-together is to give donations in honor of friends and loved ones. Many of us would appreciate receiving a small symbol of a greater gift. I encourage you to try it out this year, with at least a few people on your list, and see the response you get. With a lovely presentation, the recipient will know that you have put a lot of thought into your gift and donation.
Here are some ideas for creating memorable “in honor of” gifts. Try coupling small tokens–to serve as a lovely reminder throughout the year–that represent the cause you are supporting with a note explaining your contribution.
Charity type: food bank
Gift: jar of homemade preserves or small fruit basket
Charity type: children’s fund
Gift: child-themed Christmas ornament
Charity type: church foundation
Gift: prayer book or small Bible
Charity type: literacy project
Gift: a favorite book
Charity type: art museum or foundation
Gift: small item, like a coffee mug or packet of pencils, with the organization’s logo
TIP: Picking the right charity can be a little overwhelming. One site I find helpful for gathering information is www.Give.org. Run by the national Better Business Bureau, this comprehensive site offers “guidance to donors on making informed giving decisions.”
MILK BONE PHOTO: Giving to your local A.S.P.C.A. or animal rescue is a popular choice. Dressing up a dog treat is a charming presentation and will be appreciated by furry friends.
TOPIARY PHOTO: Community gardens and nature preservation foundations are well represented with a lovely topiary or pretty plant the recipient can enjoy all year. |
