Summer’s Bounty
August 2006
Although the perennial border has peaked by August, and the bugs are at their fiercest, there are still many summer treats left to enjoy before the days grow noticeably shorter and cooler. Among them is an ongoing tomato harvest and its promise to provide garden fruit through the winter if I tend them now. This month, I’ll show you some of the ways I take on the tomatoes, both in preserving and cooking. As my potted hedges of cream Hydrangea paniculata bloom in full glory here at Weatherstone, I can’t resist the urge to gather from the farmer’s market and flower mart all manner of blue and lavender hydrangeas to arrange. I’ll show you how these giant mopheads are an easy mate to so many different cut flowers.
