I suppose it is because I am a gardener that the seasons inform nearly every aspect of my life. Not the least of these is entertaining. As I plan a summer chock full of breakfasts in the sunroom, lunches by the pond and dinners under the birch trees, I love to dream up table designs and the many ways I can use my summer dishes. (I am admittedly addicted to dishes–I have three sets for poolside dining alone.)
Summer is the opportune time to expand any collection of dishes and table accessories because it is the most informal, and therefore affordable, of the seasons. Porcelain is traded for ceramic or pottery, fine silver for silver-plate or stainless and crystal for glass.
During the hot months, I focus on more neutral shades like beige, sand, white, tortoise, green and blue and I find natural fibers like raffia, wicker and bamboo both inspiring and appropriate. Overall, my summer entertaining is more casual, but not any less studied. As I begin assembling the different elements for my table, I also consider the food that will be served. Not only do I want the freshest ingredients and most delicious recipes, but I also want food that will look both appetizing and artistic on the plate. I want the overall appearance of my table to be as eye-catching as the food is mouth watering.
As you plan your summer entertaining, keep these design ideas in mind:
- Mix it up. I never use just one set of dishes. Using an assortment of plates, bowls and accent pieces adds creativity and fun to your design. Achieving different looks is also less expensive this way because you can buy pieces as separates rather than entire place settings.
- If your repertoire of tableware is limited, stick with neutral dishes (white, beige, tan) and use linens, glasses, and serving pieces in bright colors and patterns for accents.
- An economical way to change the look of your table is through linens. I often buy remnant fabric to make simple tablecloths. By keeping a supply of white napkins on hand, I can change the canvas to my heart's delight.
- Keep a stash of basic vases, platters and bowls that can be transformed by different flowers and linens. Open-mouthed vases are the most user friendly for arranging.
- Enjoy summer's bounty by incorporating fruits, vegetables and herbs into your centerpiece and accents. I once decorated a table with gorgeous tomatoes and gobs of basil. It looked and smelled wonderful and was the perfect way to savor the height of tomato season.
