Playing with color and mixing patterns has always been one of my
favorite aspects of design. Whether working on a collection of clothes,
decorating a room, planning a garden, doing a bouquet or wrapping a
collection of presents, the creative process is the same. Back in the
70’s (yikes, that seems like yesterday!) when I worked as design
assistant to Oscar de la Renta it was one of my responsibilities to edit
thousands of printed fabrics and to work with print designers. They
then created on patterns on paper that would be printed on scarves,
dress fabrics, sheets, even umbrellas! When selecting a print I would
then work with the fabric designer to create coordinates for the
original pattern; we would have to do each “story” in three different
color combinations. This early foundation developed my interest and
my eye. After so many collections, houses and gardens it is not
surprising that I would create our collections for Presentations in
much the same way.
